Overview
Ukraine - is a country in Eastern Europe.
Area: 603,628 km² (the second largest country in Eastern Europe).
Political system: presidential-parliamentary republic.
Legislature: unicameral Parliament (Verkhovna Rada).
Major languages: Ukrainian (official), Russian
Currency: Ukrainian Hryvnia (UAH). The hryvnia against the U.S. dollar - 7.97 hryvnia per U.S. $ 1 exchange rate against the euro - 11,28 hryvnia for one euro (at the beginning of August 2011)
Membership: UN (since 1947), WTO (2008), Council of Europe (1995) IMF (1992), CIS (1991), Guam (1997), WTO (2008)
Administrative and territorial division
The administrative-territorial structure of Ukraine is a three-level system:
first level - the Autonomous Republic of Crimea, 24 regions and cities with special status;
the second level - cities of regional and republican subordination;
the third level - the district level cities, town type villages, small towns and villages.
The most populous areas in Ukraine are - Donetska, Dnipropetrovska, Kharkivska, Lvivska, Odesska and Luganska.
5 cities have the status of cities “millionaires”:
- Kiev
- Kharkov
- Odessa
- Dnepropetrovsk
- Donetsk
Among other major cities of Ukraine (more than 500 thousand people) are also Lviv (Western Region), Nikolaev (Southern Region), Krivoy Rog and Zaporozhye (Eastern Region).
Around all the cities “millionaires” and some of the big cities of Ukraine the agglomerations have been formed, which make about 37% of the population. There is a trend to an increasing of the urbanization.
Population
On June 1, 2011 the population of Ukraine amounted to 45.687 million 162 people, of whom 69% - urban population and 31% - rural. Over the past 5 years, the total number of Ukraine's population decreased by 2.8%, and the downward trend continues.

According to the State Statistics Committee for 2011 46% of the population are men and 54% - women.
